The Rise of Mechanical Elephants
Kerala, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, has long incorporated elephants into religious ceremonies. However, concerns over the treatment of captive elephants have intensified. In response, the Edayar Sree Vadakkumbad Shiva Vishnu Temple in Kannur unveiled ‘Vadakumbada Sankaranarayan’ a three-meter-tall, 800-kg mechanical elephant. This initiative was inspired by the Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple’s adoption of a robotic elephant, marking a significant shift in temple practices.

Organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India have been instrumental in promoting this change. PETA’s collaboration with the Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple led to the introduction of ‘Irinjadappilly Raman,’ a robotic elephant designed to conduct ceremonies safely and humanely.
